The Next Read-a-Long!

As you know, our Read-a-Long of Middlemarch is coming to a close. We have only 4 more weeks to go! I can’t believe we’re almost done. Thank you to everyone who has been joining me for Middlemarch Mondays! I never would have gotten through this 800+ page monster without you!!!

I have prepared a poll in which everyone can vote for the next Read-a-Long. For whichever title that you choose, I will host a manageable chapter-by-chapter Read-a-Long to keep you (and me!) on track. It will start at the beginning of October, but I wanted to prepare myself in advance. That way, everyone has the time to get their paws on a copy of our selected book.

I’ll leave the poll open until the end of September.

This poll is now closed. Thank you for voting!!

Check it out!

  1. OK…I’m not gonna lie. I think I voted twice. I voted once on the poll page and then came to your page to comment and voted again (In my defense I didn’t think it would let me vote twice. I just thought it would show the results). I will just say that I voted for The Count of Monte Cristo. You just have a way of sucking me into your read-a-longs! I’ve been wanting to read The Count of Monte Cristo (the unabridged version…*sigh*…somehow I didn’t realize that I had the abridged version) for a really long time. I also have the Susanna Clarke book so I could try that one. I have had MAJOR fun with Middlemarch. Well, maybe not fun, but definite fun hanging out on your weekly posts! You and Ellie have made it a bearable experience!

    • Don’t worry! I’m so glad you’re interested in the titles! I tried to put a variety of genres/authors in the choice. I would love to read Count of Monte Cristo as well. I am one of very few who actually enjoyed the movie, so I would love to sink my teeth into its source material.

      • Alexandre Dumas is my favorite classics author. I loved The Three Musketeers. The Count of Monte Cristo was fantastic too, but again…I read the stupid abridged version so now I have to do a reread. If it wins, what translation are you getting? For pretty, I like the Modern Library and the Penguin printings, but I don’t know if the translations are any good. I read the Bantam abridged before.

  2. I have Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell on my shelf waiting to be read. I would not be opposed to re-reading the Count of Monte Cristo since I also read a copy of the abridged version (didn’t know there was such a thing until after I bought it …grumbles)

    • I’m definitely up for either Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell or Count of Monte Cristo. I have JS and Mr. N on my shelves too. My husband read it and I want to get to it at some point. Of course, I really love Edmund Dantes and Fernand Mondego (is that how you spell it?)…the story of Count of Monte Cristo is fantastic. I can’t wait to see what we’re reading. :)

      • Ah, Edmund Dantes… he is a great character. Of course, all I have to go from is the movie. Either way, I think we’ll enjoy the next read a long a little more than Middlemarch. And, I watched the first episode of Middlemarch on You Tube. I’m sad to say that it is about as interesting as the book. So far, it’s kinda boring, but I’ll watch through to the end anyway.

  4. I’ve voted for Bleak House as I have missed out on the other read that is going around and I really want to read it. I’ve already read The Count of Monte Cristo and loved it so I’d like to read something else instead – I’d love Susannah Clarke’s book to win also.

Look forward to seeing what wins :)

  5. If you pick na classic I can join (because of gutenberg.org) so I voted for the Henry James. There is a read-a-long of bleak house at the moment which is why I didn’t vote for it. I’d love to do Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell but I left it in the Netherlands :(

  6. When will the first post be for The Count of Monte Cristo? Also, which version are you reading? The Robin Buss translation from Penguin Classics is the one I’m planning to get. A quick search and asking a friend that read it made it seem like it was one of the better translations out there (since the older translations left out some things that Victorian society deemed uncouth I guess).

Just let me know. I can’t wait to start!

    • You must be psychic because I was just working on this today. I’ll be posting about the start of the next read a long tomorrow. The Count of Monte Cristo is starting on October 13th. I’ll be posting in 5 chapter increments; I hope that’s not too fast/slow but it seemed like a manageable amount to read over and above regular reading commitments.

I’m looking forward to it as well!

      • Oooo…that’s like 24 weeks. That’s a long time! OK…either way, I’m game. I loved the abridged version (I’m still so embarrassed about that) so I’m sure I’ll love the unabridged. I am hosting a Three Musketeers Read-a-long in January too. LOL! Lots of Dumas. I love him.

      • I know, it might take a long time to get through it but I didn’t want to set the bar too high for myself just in case I couldn’t keep up. Feel free to read ahead; I just didn’t want to over extend myself. No worries! I accidentally bought the abridged version as well without realizing until years later!! :)
